Our Solutions > Intertidal Rivers

Salix have extensive experience of design and implementation of bioengineering works within inter tidal rivers. We co authored the Environment Agency publication “Estuary Edges: Ecological Design Guidance” together with Mike Wells of Biodiversity By Design, demonstrating our knowledge in this challenging environment.

Inter tidal rivers offer a unique challenge for bioengineering solutions due to the water quality, high salinity, the highly variable water levels and long periods of inundation that occurs with the tidal influence. In addition, the nature of the fine alluvial soils in estuaries and the turbulent flows and wave action means that erosion is prevalent where no vegetation occurs. Salix have developed bio engineering techniques to suit these environments and can establish inter tidal plant species, including plants grown from local provenance seed. We can also carry out more traditional methods such as sheet piling.
